Abstract

This study aims to test the teacher's experience of using politeness in digital learning during the COVID-2019 pandemic. This study used a descriptive-qualitative method with a sample of 20 teachers from elementary, junior high, high school and university teachers. The sample is asked for responses to analyze strategies for using language politeness when managing distance learning using video conferencing applications. In this study, the authors found words, phrases, or sentences that were perceived to contain indicators of politeness and fostered positive responses from students as parties invited to communicate in online learning via video conference. In this study, the authors also found interesting facts related to the background of the Muslim teacher sample. The teachers used politeness strategies inspired by the six principles of polite language in the Al-Quran, namely qaulan sadidan, qaulan ma'rufan, qaulan balighan, qaulan maysuran, qaulan kariman, and qaulan layyinan. From the results of this study, the authors obtained seven indicators of polite language value which can be used as a reference in developing a politeness education strategy during distance learning management.
